Step 2 ~ backstitching and getting started

Then backstitch a line around the edge using two strands of thread. (This makes it easier to catch the thread when making up.) I have stitched mine in white on both squares but you can use a contrasting colour if you like. I counted 5 squares from the edge of my design so that they are both equal and trim the edges a little so that there isn’t a bulk of fabric on the inside.

Place the corner of one to the centre of one line on the other, tie the thread underneath and sew through the holes to secure them together.

Bring the needle back up through one of the holes and begin whip stitching through the backstitched lines, picking up one stitch from each square from right to left or left to right depending which hand you use. Then pull the thread tight.
